Resources to help you get started

Here are resources to help you begin implementing global education in your own classroom.  Resources listed are both within the Bozeman community and beyond.

MONTANA RESOURCES
  • Montana World Affairs Council
This organization supports global learning by training teachers each year as several state-wide institutes.  Additionally they offer trips to Turkey for teachers to learn more about the culture.  They also sponsor the Academic Worldquest competition for students to complete in global and current events knowledge.
  • Sister State Relations
This organization creates relationships between cities in Montana and cities around the world.  These relationships allow teachers to connect to teachers around the world.  Teachers can explore their current sister state or city, or work with their local government office to forge a new connection.
  • World Montana
This website focuses on citizen diplomacy and offers several programs that connect citizens and students in Montana with people around the world. Several of my students have been involved in the Iraqi Youth Exchange and Youth Ambassador programs and have spoken highly about their experiences.

Montana State University-The local state university offers many opportunities for global connections, here are a few:
  • MSU Office of International Relations
This office offers a number of ways Montanans can engage with people from around the world.  Teachers may host an international teacher in their classroom or citizens may simply choose to connect with an international university student once a month.
  • MSU Engineers Without Borders
This local chapter of EWB provides opportunities for students and citizens to travel around the world focusing on various engineering projects such as clean water access.  University participants are more than willing to speak to classrooms about their projects and experiences internationally.
  • International Student Groups and Organizations
These groups offer the opportunity to learn more about cultures around the world.  Teachers may wish to arrange a guest speaker, or simply attend the International Food Bazaar held every spring.
  • MSU Religion Office
This office endeavors to educate people about the range of religious beliefs and practices around the world.  They offer many great speakers throughout the school year.
  • MSU Leadership Office
According to their website, this organization "Inspires MSU students to become leaders who serve as catalysts for positive change."  This organization exemplifies the key components of global education by demonstrating how people take action.  Additionally, they offer inspiring speakers from around the world each school year.
  • Ace Language Institute
This organization works with international MSU students on language skills.  Teachers may seek instructional strategies or connect personally with an international student.
  • Central Asia Institute
Headquartered in Bozeman, the CAI builds schools for girls around the world in developing and war-torn nations.  The organization is a resource for teachers wishing to connect with a school, sponsor a school or student through service projects, or learn more about their programs through guest speakers.
  • Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation
This organization is also headquartered in Bozeman and connects U.S. citizens with various projects in Nepal.  Again, an excellent example of the concepts of global citizenship, especially "take action," this program offers a variety of ways students and teachers can get involved.
  • Ugandan Orphans Fund
Yet another admirable international organization headquartered in Bozeman.  This organization supports children in Uganda orphaned by civil war and AIDS.  There are a number of opportunities for students and teachers to connect and help out.

RESOURCES BEYOND MONTANA
